About Me

Australia has been blessed with wonderful, unique and iconic wildlife. This site is dedicated to promoting its enjoyment and preservation.
Koala, Phascolarctos Cinereus.

In common with many species, koalas tend to live longer in captivity than in the wild. The absence of threats such as cars and dogs, the presence of a regular supply of food, and the attendance of veterinary help all combine to extend the average life span from 8-10 years in the wild to 12-14 years in captivity.

Koalas are often called koala bears. However, this is not correct, they are marsupials. The misconception comes from the latin name phascolarctos, meaning pouched bear. This goes back to 1816, before the taxonomy of this animal was fully understood.

This photograph was taken at the Australian Reptile Park in New South Wales.
