Koala, Phascolarctos Cinereus

There is no real agreement as to the status of koalas. However, what we do know is that the numbers have declined hugely since European settlement and those that are left are often in isolated populations which can show signs of inter-breeding. Habitat loss is the main threat. This is because koalas are surprisingly fussy eaters and the eucalyptus trees which provide their food (and most of their water) are still cut down in large numbers across their range.

Fortunately they breed well in captivity and where food is plentiful and predators are scarce their numbers increase rapidly.

The name koala bear is a misnomer, koalas have nothing to do with bears.

This delightful one-year-old lives at the Australian Reptile Park north of Sydney.
