Tasmanian Devil, Sarcophilus harrisi.

Tasmanian devils are thought to have gained their name because of the terrible howl that is heard when they are squabbling over food. This, coupled with the very red ears would probably have been enough to scare the life out of the first Europeans to see them whilst camping out in the dense Tasmanian forests.

They have the biting strength of a dog four times their size, easily enough to crunch through bone, and putting them on a par with hyenas.

This Devil was photographed at the Australian Reptile Park in New South Wales.
