About Me

Australia has been blessed with wonderful, unique and iconic wildlife. This site is dedicated to promoting its enjoyment and preservation.
ASL2 - Australian sea lion
Australian Sea-Lion, Neophoca cinerea.

The Australian Sea-lion, along with other native seal species, were hunted to the brink of extinction for their fur, meat and for the oil from their fat. Early in the 19th century some populations had been completely wiped out whilst others were down to tiny numbers.

All seals found in Australian marine waters are now protected by law and populations have recovered. However, the Australian sea-lion is still listed as vulnerable and they remain sensitive to the effects of disturbance, diseases, oil spills etc.

These two playful young males were photographed at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island.
