Red-necked wallaby, Macropus rufogriseus

A trip to pasture land in Australia during the daytime is unlikely to result in many sightings of macropods. However, come along at evening or early morning, as here, and you may be rewarded with large 'mobs' emerging from the undergrowth to feed.

The balancing tail of the macropods makes them extremely efficient movers and whilst it is rare to see them moving at full speed, their strong hind legs will propel them at up to 40mph and they have been known to jump over fences 10 feet high.

This picture was taken on the New South Wales central-coast.
