Australia, Lonely Planet Well what to say about this book. If you've ever picked up a Lonely Planet guide you'll know exactly what you get for your money. My experience is that many people aren't so keen on these guide books but many more are, so you pays your money you takes your choice. The only thing really to note about this guide is the size. You're unlikely to be doing more than a fraction of the things in this book so carrying round a book that weighs 850g, the best part of 2lb, might be asking a bit much. I have this book and I think it's great, but then again I live here so it never sees the inside of a rucksack. Have a look at the east- and west-coast guides (below) and see if either of these wouldn't be better.
Watching Wildlife Australia, Lonely Planet. While there are plenty of on-line sites that give advice for seeing Australia's wildlife, nothing comes close to this wonderful book. I've been using it for a few years now and the advice it contains is always accurate and useful. There are five sections to the book. It starts with a good overview of nature in Australia, moves on to wildlife watching - when to go, how to do it and what to bring - then looks at the different habitats found in Australia. The fourth section is Parks and Places, a state-by-state guide to the best locations for viewing wildlife. Each overview includes information such as location, facilities, accommodation and, of course, wildlife highlights. The last section is a wildlife gallery, complete with useful background information about the majority of species that the average observer is likely to encounter. If you were to spend an extended period of time in Australia then you would probably look to other sources for a more detailed view of wildlife but that would be in addition to this book and then only for the serious enthusiast. As it is this book comes highly recommended.
Travel Photography, A Guide to Taking Better Pictures, Lonely Planet. Well clearly not just for Australia but worth including here because it's packed full of good advice and if you're coming to Oz you're bound to be bringing a camera. If you are an experienced SLR shooter it's likely that you won't get too much from this book but for all others it's great. There is plenty of stuff on equipment and the basics of photography and fully half the book on techniques for taking better pictures of people, places, cities etc. With over 200 pages this is a substantial book but it's never too much. Richard I'Anson's photography will be an inspiration to all who travel with a camera and come home with disappointing pictures and I'll be surprised if there are areas which you feel he has missed out. One thing is for certain, if you read this book and take note of the information offered, you WILL take better travel photographs. And remember, Australia is a photographer's paradise (great light, great subjects) so if you are coming here and your technique could use a little improvement now is the time to do it. Please note that the UK link is for the first edition, the US for the second - not sure why this is.
East Coast Australia, Lonely Planet I imagine this book must cover 90% of all trips to Australia so it's good that LP have thought to offer this information separate from the main guide.
Western Australia, Lonely Planet And for those of you who have chosen to visit Aus without coming to the East (Sydney, Blue mountains, the Great Barrier Reef, koalas, platypus, Tassie devils...!)
Dive and Snorkel Australia, Lonely Planet If you are coming to Australia, and diving or snorkeling is going to be a big part of your trip, this book would be a useful purchase, both for planning where to go and making the best of it when you get there. If, on the other hand, you're going to spend two days on the reef then it's really not worth it. Don't forget to look at my books-fish page too.
And for those of you who don't like Lonely Planet....
Footprint Australia Lots of detail, few photos. Dull but useful? Please note that the US version is the 2004 release, the UK one the 2002 release. Again, not sure why this is.
Rough Guide to Australia As above really, loads of information, which is the main thing I suppose, but you're not likely to pick this up just for a flick through looking for inspiration.
Insight Guide - Australia From one extreme to the other really, this book is glossy throughout which in reality means a poor weight-to-information ratio. It's full of great pictures and would almost do as a souvenir of your trip. However, it doesn't compare to the others when it comes to information.
